The Ontario government announced a 2023 Rent Increase of 2.5%. Landlords can raise rent if they gave tenants at least 90 days' written notice using the correct rent increase form, If your unit falls under Ontario rent increase, you can expect to receive an N1 Rent Increase Form.
Exceptions
If the rental unit was not occupied for residential purposes on or before November 15, 2018, it is exempt from the annual rent increase guideline. This means that a landlord can increase the rent by any amount. If your unit falls under this rent increase, you can expect to receive an N2 Rent Increase Form.
The landlord can increase the rent once every 12 months. The landlord must give the tenant a 90-day written notice of the increase before it takes effect.
